Holiday Update From Appy Entertainment Secret World Headquarters

From buzzings and bleepings on the TV and the intertubes I gather there might be cold weather out there somewhere, but here at the Carlsbad Secret World Headquarters of Appy Entertainment, the sun is shining and the boys are back at work.

(stole this image from a site hawking a San Clemente beach rental … just up the coast from here!)

Well, maybe all of the boys aren’t back at work. Marc-Antoine is still returning from France, Sarge is unaccounted for overseas after alluding to a headwound in his last post, and the Ulm has failed to appear for undisclosed and doubtless embarassing reasons. But we few, we happy few, we band of brothers are back at it this morning, fighting the good fight, making cool stuff, and getting away from houses full of in-laws.

The world marches on, of course, even if our hidden lair was empty for the weekend. Notable news:

Tom Cruise made a few more bucks than we thought he would with his eyepatch picture, but we were only off by three million bones for the weekend with our uniformed prediction, and it has been amusing to see how similar many of the legitimate reviews for Valkyrie have been to our own send-up. The Ulm and I will be back with another installment of Not At The Movies early in the new year, taking aim at Inkheart.

Looks like there was a big spike in iPod Touch sales thanks to the holiday, which is good news for Appy and every other iPhone developer. Better still, the always-reliable Fart Index indicates those new users are getting on the App Store and buying stuff.

Yes, Wal-Mart is indeed selling iPhones, but AT&T seems to have scooped them with a $99 price point for refurbished models.

We saw a nice uptick in traffic at our freshly-launched Appy Entertainment website over the weekend, so thanks to everyone who stopped by and registered. We’ll be rolling out a genuine paper drive to increase our hits both here and on the website in early January, but in the meantime your interest is appreciated, as are your referrals.

All right, time for me to catch some more California Christmas sun. Back later with more of the usual nonsense, plus a book report!

Walmart started selling the iPhone this week. That opens the door to a completely new category of apps.

Hey, Daniel, thanks for the link. I love the “new iPhone user” photo at your site.

Sales of the old “Deer Hunter” computer game at Wal-Mart are the stuff of (profitable) legend, and having worked with the guys that brought Redneck Rampage to market, I can guarantee there’s money to be made in the “red states” … but do you feel that the association of the iPhone with Wal-Mart will be a net gain, or loss, overall, for the iPhone brand?
