Attacking Momma Mia with a “Not At The Movies” would be like dynamite fishing in a swimming pool … it’s obvious that I would never go, unless I was a female or an Englishman (they went crazy for tha movie over in the U.K.). There has to be at least a slim chance that I would want to see a movie before it can qualify for our irrational hatred.

Besides, last weekend, I was NOT At The Theater, as wife and children went to Phantom of the Opera up in L.A. while I went back to my friend’s house and slept on the couch for three hours. I don’t have anything against Phantom, really, but I have already seen it more than any straight man alive, and if I went again I’d either need a Purple Heart or a set of Judy Garland records.

Paul, I can’t believe you’d write this rant and not touch on all the family fun you dodged by refusing to go to the sing-along version of Mama Mia! I volunteered to sit next to you and keep you from doing harm to yourself! I had the duct tape and gag ready to go.

But noo, you just assumed you wouldn’t like the movie! What harm could two hours of singing ABBA tunes with Meryl Streep do?

You’re like the little kid who’s sure he won’t like snails until he eats one pan roasted with garlic and butter. It’s time to take a cultural risk and actually see a movie you know you’ll loathe!

And make it a musical!

We should be so lucky that Inkheart would rise (sink?) to the level of being Razzie-worthy … having NOT seen it, I am certain it will be indistinguishable pap that will pass through the theater and be forgotten by the time you walk back to the car. They can’t all be classics but when you try this hard shouldn’t the results be more than mediocre?
