We're #1
We had a little promotion over the weekend, putting FaceFighter on “sale” for free (and it remains free at this hour, and for at least a little while longer). Details will follow in another post, but for now, suffice to say that offering our flagship game for free resulted in several hundred thousand downloads all around the world.
Crazy, right?
Well, there’s a method to our madness.
The whole point of giving FaceFighter away for free was to cross-promote our newest game, Tune Runner.
How has that worked out?
Just fine, thanks.
In just a little over a week, Tune Runner is close to its first 100,000 downloads, and has reached category or overall #1 status in App Stores around the world, including Italy, France, Germany, Austria, Ireland, Netherlands, Finland (home of Sarge’s favorite band), Spain, Sweden, and more. Tune Runner has reached #3 in the Free Music Game category in the United States, the U.K., and Canada, trailing only the free versions of Rock Band and Tap Tap Revenge. In short, we’ve taken a new and original music game IP from nowhere to near the top of the world market in just over a week.
To which we say thanks, to our fans around the world! This is a tremendous launch for Tune Runner and it encourages us to further refine and develop the game. Our 1.1 update (improving shape-drawing performance) has been in the review queue at Apple for about a week, and we have further tweaks and refinements lined up for version 1.2. We’re also looking at releasing a stand-alone premium version of the app (identical to the version you get when purchasing the in-app “Fusion” upgrade), and we’re testing ideas for iPad, too. There is still a long way to go, but it looks like Tune Runner has real franchise potential for Appy Entertainment.
How about FaceFighter?
FaceFighter had already reached #1 as a paid app, so it should come as no surprise that giving the game away gratis pushed our up close and personal fighting game to the top of the charts all over the place, including Japan, Austria, Switzerland, Singapore, Sweden, Indonesia, China, Thailand, Germany, France, Italy, and more (the flags in our illustrations show all the territories where we hit #1 overall or in one or more categories). We’re delighted to make so many new friends all around the world, and we’re even happier to know that those friends are now busy beating the living crap out of each other, thanks to FaceFighter.
A longer post with more analysis, more numbers, and our assessment of whether it was worth it to sacrifice several days of revenue from FaceFighter to get Tune Runner launched will follow at a later date (UPDATE: It is now live HERE). For now, we’re just going to celebrate this rocket ride up the charts, and get to work answering our overflowing feedback mailbox …!
